“We enjoyed working with you before the event in trying to sort out music, the responses from you, etc. …We will definitely direct people your way should the occasion arrive in the future.” (Dansations note: Couple needed to include music from Inda - both traditional & Bollywood-style)

Theme That Party

Dansations — Fri, 02/10/2012 - 14:24

The calendar says “March” but you’re thinking “1985” or “Hollywood” or “Country”. Why? You’re planning a party…and you don’t want to do an ‘anything’ party – so what are your options? A Theme gives you something to plan around – music, décor, food, attire - all hinge on what theme you choose.
There are creative ways to theme a party and engage your guests. It’s not all about the costuming. Here are a few ideas to get you started on themes, guest involvement and décor options.
“Hollywood” – Movie Stars – doesn’t even necessarily need to be a human character. Consider animals, monsters or even ‘things’. Cat=Garfield, Monster=Godzilla, Thing=Smurf. The usual suspects here work too – Humphrey Bogart to Johnny Depp, Marilyn Monroe to Drew Berrymore. You could have each guest bring a symbol or trademark of a Movie Star. Then place them on display and have a contest to see who could match the article with a list of ‘stars’.
“Country” – Music could be anything with country-ish sounds…the obvious (Garth Brooks, Big n Rich, Johnny Cash) but could also include some Southern rock or cross-over sounds like Lynyard Skynard, .38 Special or Los Lobos! Décor could be hay bales (if outside or in a garage). Have each guest ‘decorate’ their bale and award prizes for best ones.
“80’s”, “90’s”, “50’s” etc. Obviously, you’ll be picking music of these era’s. You could theme tables, food stations or areas of the party by band names, fads or beverages of the day. “80’s” table by fad – Rubix cube, Breakdancing, Pet Rocks. “50’s” Rooms could be the “Sock Hop” (dance area), “Soda Fountain” (kitchen) or “Drive In” (parking area).
When having a themed-event, keep in mind that not everyone will want to dress up. So, by creating a way for more guests to get involved you can convince more people to come & participate by giving them some options. Promote on your invitations for them to respond by how they’ll participate. This way you can get to know your attendees and can plan accordingly. If you have 10 people in costume – you can still have a contest, just only have 2 categories. If 20 people are bringing a ‘theme’ item for a table or to display it may help save you money on décor allowing you to spend more on entertainment or food.
We wouldn’t recommend a theme for a school fundraiser. These audiences are finite – current parents, alumni – and a poor participation rate and the funds you’re trying to raise can take a big hit. But if you’re fundraising for a non-profit – this would be a fine idea as these events are open to the public & have the hopes of reaching a far wider audience.
This may seem a bit overwhelming at first but if you plan it right then it can be a huge success – no matter it’s a private event or a high-profile one. We’ll be happy to help you plan, create and execute it – give us a call for a free consultation!
